Question label:

Microbiome consent

Question text:

We would also like to ask you for a sample of your microbiome. The “human microbiome” refers to the vast number of microorganisms that live inside the human body, particularly in the gut. Research has shown that the microbiome plays an extremely important role in human health and disease. We are asking you to participate in this research by contributing a sample of your poo (also known as stools).

We recognise that this is very different from asking you to answer questions on a survey, but it is only with your contribution that Understanding Society can be used to help answer cutting-edge and valuable questions about the human microbiome.

We would like to send you a collection kit with everything you need to collect a stool (poo) sample. You can collect the sample whenever is most convenient for you within the next couple of weeks, and the process should take just a few minutes.

The kit includes full instructions on how to collect and return the sample. To return it to us, you will need to take the envelope to the post office counter within two weeks of collecting it.

Once your sample has been received, it will be sent to our lab partner, the Quadram Institute. They will analyse the sample to identify the collection of bacteria and other microbes living in your digestive system.

Please watch this short video featuring feedback from other Understanding Society participants on how easy collecting and returning a stool (poo) sample is {if ff_mbiomeconsentw18 = 4|7]

Please watch this short video to learn more about the importance of microbiome research and how your contribution can advance science [if ff_mbiomeconsentw18 = 3|6].

INTERVIEWER, PLEASE GIVE THE DEVICE TO THE RESPONDENT TO ALLOW THEM TO WATCH THE VIDEO. MAKE SURE THE SOUND IS TURNED ON AND CAN BE HEARD CLEARLY. [if GRIDVARIABLES.ModeType = 1 & ff_mbiomeconsentw18 = 3 | 4 | 6 | 7]

[embedded video] [if ff_mbiomeconsentw18 = 3 | 4 | 6 | 7]

Thank you for watching the video. Please return the device to the interviewer. [if GRIDVARIABLES.ModeType = 1 & ff_mbiomeconsentw18 = 3 | 4 | 6 | 7]

To thank you for your time and effort, we will send you a £5 voucher for returning the sample to us. If you want us to return your results, we are able to send you information about the analysis of your stool (poo) sample. {if ff_mbiomeconsentw18 = 5|6|7}

Are you happy for us to send you a kit, so you can return a sample to be analysed?
